President Obama announced on Saturday that he would postpone military intervention against Syria’s Assad regime until Congress had the opportunity to consider and approve the measure. "We should have this debate,” Obama said, “because the issues are too big for business as usual."
The proposal has yielded a deep split in the American public. While the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution giving the president authority to use military force on Wednesday, the latest Pew poll shows that more Americans oppose than support such intervention in Syria, by a 48% to 29% margin. Town halls held by members of Congress across the nation have yielded spirited – and divisive – debate on whether to act.
