Joel is a proud Wisconsinite and got his start making documentaries in Milwaukee's thriving independent film community. There, Joel produced, shot and edited an award-winning series of short films spotlighting performing artists from around the city and also shot his first feature, "Out of Respect," which follows five homeless LGBT young people for one year as they struggle to find their footing after aging out of a broken foster care system.
