The Disappeared

Fault Lines examines the disappearances of thousands of citizens in Mexico, one of the worst humanitarian crises in Latin America

Families with loved ones who have vanished stand in front of a stadium in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, where the marines have set up a provisional base. All of these people believe security forces—the marines, army and/or the federal police—are responsible for the disappearance of their relatives.
Víctor Tadashi Suárez for Al Jazeera America

Tens of thousands of innocent Mexican civilians have disappeared as the government's violent war on cartels rages on.

The kidnappings are compounded by an institutional failure to investigate crimes and provide justice. For families of the victims, a missing loved one is a fate worse than death, rife with uncertainty over not knowing if their relatives are alive or dead.

As more people in Mexico disappear every day, Fault Lines investigates what is being done by the country's new administration to end one of the worst humanitarian crises in the Americas.
