Neighbors protest demolition of local Chicago community center

Tweeting under #whittier and #savelacasita, several Chicago citizen journalists and education activists have chronciled the protest against the demolition of a community center at Whittier Elementary School.

The center, also a fieldhouse at Whittier, is known as "La Casita" ("The Little House"). It was demolished yesterday morning. Chicago Public Schools said that the fieldhouse was "deemed unsafe for occupancy." Demolition crews showed up on Friday night, but protesters arrived to try and stop the work.

According to local reports, Chicago police arrested 10 people yesterday morning during the center's demolition. Many opposing the demolition continue to tweet updates today.
