How a vertical farming tower works

In order to maximize the amount of food people can grow in one area, some are beginning to farm upwards. Tower Garden, created by Juice Plus+, is a low tech aeroponic system that allows both commercial farmers and gardening hobbyists to farm vertically, even in a space as small a backyard.

Here's how it works:

1. Fill the Tower Garden's 20-gallon base reservoir with water and plant nutrients.

2. Pot the plant seedlings in the various windows lining the tower.

3. Turn on the low-wattage pump inside the base. The submersible pump pushes the nutrient-rich water up through a center column. Once it reaches the top of the tower, a filter helps spread the water evenly over the plant roots as it falls.

4. The continuous recycling of water not only nourishes the seedling with nutrients and oxygen while minimizes the amount of water waste.

Aeroponic technology allows gardeners and farmers to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, beans, and both edible and decorative flowers all in one place.
