Unsung Heroes

Code talkers, Hmong soldiers & women vets: This #MemorialDay, we highlight unsung heroes.

Listen to one female vet share her experience with homelessness:

I think a lot of it has to do with embarrassment. So a lot of veterans do not want to seek help... a lot of people suffer in private.

On Memorial Day, AJAMStream recognizes the triumphs of our “unsung” minority veterans, such as the Native American Choctaw Code Talkers of WW1, the first African American army regiment (“The Harlem Hellfighters,”) the CIA-trained Hmong soldiers who died in Vietnam and female veterans, who are now the fastest-growing segment of the US homeless population. On Saturday at 5:30pmEST, we celebrate these soldiers’ sacrifices and ongoing struggle for inclusion.

Guests:

Philip Smith, Lao Veterans of America

Nuchi Nashoba, President of our Choctaw Code Talker Association (granddaughter of Choctaw code talker)

Dr. Herman Viola, Curator Emeritus of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian

Dr. Francoise Bonnell, Director of the U.S. Army Women's Museum at Fort Lee, Virginia.
