#TweetOff: Is ISIL Islamic?

On June 29, 2014, ISIL proclaimed itself to be a caliphate for Muslims worldwide and renamed itself the Islamic State.

The armed group Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) has made international headlines due to its sudden rise and gruesome war crimes, such as beheadings of minorities and the kidnapping and murder of journalists.

Are these atrocities committed in the name of Islam? We debate.

Against the Motion: Dr. H.A. Hellyer nonresident fellow in the Project on US Relations with the Islamic World at the Centre for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution – and associate fellow in International Security Studies at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
